What Areas Can Be Treated With Laser Hair Removal?

At Reno Sparks MedSpa in Reno, NV, we are passionate about helping our clients enhance their appearance and improve their quality of life. If you feel frustrated by facial or body hair and don’t want to spend the rest of your life shaving, laser hair removal may be the optimal solution for you.

What Areas Can Be Treated With Laser Hair Removal?

Laser hair removal can be used to treat almost any region of the face or body, including the upper lip, chin, and sideburns. This treatment is commonly used on the body to eliminate unwanted underarm hair, chest hair, back hair, and stomach hair. However, it can also be used in other areas, including the bikini line, pubic region, and legs. Additionally, you can safely remove unwanted hand, foot, finger, or toe hair.

What Areas Can’t Be Treated With Laser Therapy?

While laser therapy is FDA-approved for the removal of unwanted hair from almost anywhere, it is not appropriate for the removal of hair near the eyes. For example, you can’t get laser hair removal to treat a unibrow or thick eyebrow hair. You also can’t treat nose or ear hair, and you can’t remove unwanted hair from tattooed skin.

Furthermore, you will not be able to treat unwanted hair with laser therapy if your skin is irritated at the time of your appointment. For instance, you can’t treat a problem area if you have an active acne, eczema, or psoriasis outbreak. Similarly, your skin should be free from burns, wounds, and infections.

Am I a Good Candidate for This Treatment?

To confirm your candidacy for laser hair removal, you must attend an initial evaluation. We need to talk about your current health and habits and thoroughly discuss your medical history before we decide. If you have used a medication containing isotretinoin in the past six months, you will not be considered a good candidate for this treatment. You also should not expect to be considered a good candidate if you:

  • Are pregnant
  • Have a history of keloid scarring
  • Have a history of skin cancer
  • Suffer from lupus
  • Use topical products that cause photosensitivity
  • Spend a lot of time sunbathing or tanning

If there are no medical contraindications, you can expect to qualify for this treatment if you have realistic expectations and can comply with all preparation and aftercare guidelines. We’ll give you a brief overview of what is expected from you now and give you comprehensive guidelines during your initial consultation.

What Preparation Steps Are Required Before Treatment?

One of the most important preparation steps to take before your laser hair removal session is to minimize UV exposure for four to six weeks. You should not use tanning beds or tanning lamps, and you must use a broad-spectrum, high-SPF sunscreen daily, reapplying as necessary to maintain protection. It is also very important that you don’t use any tanning creams or sprays.

You should shave the targeted areas the night before or the day of your appointment, but you should not use any other hair removal methods before your treatment. Depilatory cream can burn your skin; waxing and plucking unwanted hairs remove them from their roots, diminishing the efficacy of the laser therapy. You also must stop taking certain oral drugs and supplements and avoid applying certain topical cosmetics and medications.

What Aftercare Guidelines Are Required After Treatment?

Once your treatment is complete, you must continue minimizing UV exposure for several weeks. It is also imperative that you avoid heat exposure for a few days post-treatment. This means that you must avoid hot tubs, saunas, and vigorous exercise, and you should take tepid showers rather than hot baths. Moreover, you must moisturize your skin at least once daily.

Furthermore, you must avoid using any topical products that may irritate your skin for a few days post-treatment. For example, you may not use any creams that contain retinol, AHAs, BHAs, or glycolic acid. Although these products are usually good for your skin, it will be especially sensitive after treatment and they may cause irritation. Additionally, you must refrain from scratching or picking at your treated areas. You also need to avoid waxing, tweezing, and using depilatory creams in the treated areas.

How Many Treatment Sessions Will I Need?

Most people require six to eight laser hair removal sessions to achieve their optimal results. Due to the number of factors affecting the efficacy of this treatment, we can’t give you a more accurate estimate of the number of sessions you will require until we have evaluated your concerns and goals. It is important not to tan before your treatment, because the treatment is most effective when your skin is much less pigmented than your unwanted hair.

You may need more treatment sessions if you have blonde, red, gray, or white hair and pale skin. Similarly, more treatment sessions than average may be required if you have dark hair and dark skin. On the other hand, you may only need four treatment sessions if you want to thin out hair in an area of concern. The area being treated also affects how many sessions you will need to achieve optimal results.

What Are the Benefits of This Treatment?

There are many compelling benefits of using laser therapy to remove unwanted hair. One such benefit is that it saves you a significant amount of time. Once your course of treatment is complete, you will no longer need to wax or shave your areas of concern. This treatment also mitigates the risk of folliculitis, abscesses, and razor burn. Moreover, you will experience less underarm and groin sweating if you remove hair from these areas.

Schedule Your Initial Consultation Today

You can use laser hair removal to rid yourself of or thin out most facial or body hair. However, you can’t get treatment if your areas of concern are irritated or artificially pigmented. You also can’t treat hair too close to the eyes. To determine if you are a good candidate for this treatment, contact us now at Reno Sparks MedSpa in Reno, NV, to schedule an initial evaluation.
