During this cleanse and exfoliate step we use both procedures and topical therapies–creams, gels and ointments. Procedures used can include chemical peels, acne facials, laser treatments, microdermabrasion and radiofrequency treatments such as the eMatrix treatment
The most effective topical skin products for acne are retinoid chemicals. Commonly used retinoids include prescription and over the counter products like retinol, Retin A (tretinoin), Differin (adapalene) and Tazorac (tazarotene). If you have sensitive skin and do not tolerate Differin or tretinoin daily we often will decrease treatments to 3 days a week or lower the concentration of the chemical in the prescription. 2% salicylic acid over the counter may also help unclog pores. It can also be used in higher concentrations in chemical peels, which are good at thinning out the excess keratin (hardened surface skin cells) that commonly blocks pores, resulting in blemish, or comedone, formation.
An approach customized to each patient is required. Insurance will generally cover acne medical visits and acne prescription medications, but usually will not pay for light therapies, laser therapy, over the counter acne products, scar reduction therapy and so forth. Many patients insist on only doing procedures and therapies that are covered by insurance to save money. Unfortunately, the most effective therapies are not covered by insurance and are labeled “cosmetic”, not medical. Those with moderate to severe acne or scarring really need to get serious about their acne, which usually means paying for some procedures the insurance company will not cover.
