As we age so do our organs, including our hearts, lungs and skin. The vaginal and vulvar area (just outside the vaginal entrance) also age. However, there are two things that affect the vaginal and vulvar aging process which make it different from aging in other tissues. First are the hormonal changes that occur with menopause. Vaginal, vulvar and urinary tissues are hormone sensitive. The second difference is related to childbirth with vaginal delivery, which stretches these tissues.

Hormonal changes are well known and occur with menopause, when estrogen levels drop. The normally thick, supple walls of a younger vagina shrink substantially.
