Do you want to prevent wrinkles? Those of you who are young enough not to have them may be looking at your older relatives and hoping not to “go there.”
While genetics may at least in part help determine how wrinkled your skin ends up being, there are some things you can do to help keep you skin from looking too wrinkled.
Here are some tips for avoiding wrinkles and keeping that youthful look.
1. Be Gentle
It’s not a good idea to wash your skin with extremely hot water, as this strips the skin of important oils and may damage some of the skin cells. Skin care professionals also do not recommend harsh scrubbing and rubbing with towels and washcloths. Using gentle cleansers, rinsing with lukewarm water, and patting skin dry are considered the best treatment for wrinkle prevention.
2. Exfoliate
This may seem like the opposite of being gentle to your skin, but not necessarily. There are gentle exfoliants out there, and you can even make your own from fine sugar, salt, or ground oatmeal. These are not harsh abrasives; done correctly, regular exfoliating can help remove dead skin cells and keep skin healthier.
3. Moisturize
Using a light moisturizer daily is a good idea, and applying moisturizer to clean skin at night may also be beneficial for wrinkle prevention. Some make-up combines coverage and moisturization, or you can wear a moisturizer under your make-up.
4. Sun Protection
Most of us know that sun exposure can give skin a wrinkled, fissured, “leathery” look. But even those who are not tanned leather-brown can get sun-induced wrinkles. Sun exposure is not only said to produce potentially damaging free radicals, but it dries skin as well. Dry skin tends to develop wrinkles. Sun exposure also darkens or may even induce freckles, age spots, and other discoloration.
5. Make-Up
Keeping make-up light and gentle is probably a good idea if you want to avoid wrinkles. The rubbing and scrubbing that is required to get make-up off your skin is therefore avoided, and harsh chemicals and dyes are not sitting on your skin all day. Some of the ingredients in conventional make-up may have substances your body treats as toxic, and having toxins on your skin for long hours each day is not conducive for wrinkle prevention.
6. Eat Well
A healthy diet that includes lots of antioxidants is said to be good for keeping skin healthy and young looking. Fresh fruits and vegetables and/or their juices are reputed to help keep skin clear and smooth. Including healthy fats in the diet is also an important step toward keeping wrinkles at bay. In general, a healthy lifestyle will help promote smooth skin.
