Whether you have lines and wrinkles or are looking for a way to prevent them, Botox therapy can be a viable solution. Expression lines, which are those that come about from smiling, frowning, or making other types of facial expressions, can become permanent with age. However, they can often be minimized with this treatment as well. Here at Reno Sparks Med Spa in Reno, NV, we’ve treated many of our patients with this nonsurgical anti-aging solution with great results.
Although the effects of Botox are temporary, making it a safer option than other treatments, the results can be maintained with regularly scheduled treatments. It also has preventative benefits, which has led to its popularity with people of all ages. So whether you plan to use it regularly or for occasional touch-ups every now and then, this treatment can be effective at just about any age, depending on your aesthetic goals and other factors.
What Is the Best Age for Getting Botox?
Botox can be used as both a corrective and preventative treatment, and because there are different reasons for getting treatment, there is no specific age that is better than another when it comes to starting this therapy. While some of our patients prefer to wait until their 40s or 50s before having their first injections, we have many who start in their 30s and even as early as their 20s, when the preventative benefits can have the greatest impact.
If you plan to use it to make minor corrections to existing lines and wrinkles, then you can simply monitor your skin for any new issues and return to us when you’re ready for additional treatments. If your goal is to prevent these types of issues before they start, then you can take a preventative approach at any time by opting for regular treatments every three to four months.
How Does Botox Work?
Botox is a medication that’s capable of relaxing facial muscles to diminish the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. It’s a protein that’s both created and rigorously tested in labs and works by blocking nerve signals in the body that tell the muscles when to contract. This can help minimize the appearance of wrinkles while reducing the depth and visibility of lines.
Common areas that are often treated with this therapy include the forehead, above the nose, around the eyes, just above the lips, and around the chin, though it can be applied to many other areas as well. The effects of this treatment wear off with time, so you’ll need to return for additional appointments when this occurs if you’d like to maintain the results.
What Areas Can Be Treated?
While not every type of wrinkle or line will benefit from this therapy, here are some areas and common types of lines we regularly treat:
Between the Brows
When frowning, you may notice vertical lines between your eyebrows, or they may appear at any time. These are called frown lines, and they are often treated with excellent results.
Near the Eyes
FDA-approved for treatment in 2013, crow’s feet are lines that typically appear in a horizontal pattern in the outer regions of both eyes, and they are also one of the most popular types of lines that are treated with this therapy.
Across the Forehead
If you’ve noticed lines running horizontally across your forehead when raising your eyebrows or making certain facial expressions, these are known as stress lines, and they’re normally an easy area to treat.
On the Nose
The nasalis muscle of the nose is responsible for making bunny lines, which typically run diagonally or vertically on the bridge of the nose and often appear with repeated muscle contractions in this area.
Above the Lips
If you’ve noticed vertical lines above your upper lip, especially when puckering your lips, these are called lipstick lines due to their close proximity to the mouth.
The Chin Area
Dimpled chin, also known as cobblestone chin, is a condition where the chin area becomes bumpy and rough looking, which can be caused by both facial expressions and a loss of collagen in the skin.
Around the Mouth
Melomental folds, also referred to as marionette lines, are vertical creases found on both the left and right sides of the mouth.
Other Areas
If you have lines or wrinkles elsewhere and are curious if we can treat them, we’ll be able to determine this by conducting a quick skin exam during your consultation.
What Should I Expect During My Appointment?
After contacting us and scheduling your first appointment, you can expect the therapy process to go as follows:
1. Initial Consultation
When you first arrive at our clinic, we’ll carry out a brief consultation with you to discuss your treatment goals, assess your skin, and answer any questions you might have. This is also a great opportunity for us to determine if this treatment is right for you or if another type of treatment may be more beneficial. If we determine that you might benefit from Botox, we can then get started with the therapy.
2. Injections Are Made
During your treatment session, a very small needle will be used to inject the medication into specific muscles. Only the muscles we aim to treat will receive this therapy, so you’ll still be able to make regular facial expressions with all other muscles remaining unaffected. The extent of your lines and wrinkles and the size and tone of your facial muscles will determine how many injections we’ll need to make at each site.
3. Aftercare Instructions
After ten to fifteen minutes, your therapy session will be over, and we’ll then provide you with some aftercare instructions. There won’t be any downtime, drowsiness, or other effects that are often seen with other forms of treatment, but we will give you instructions for taking care of yourself while at home or at work so the medication can effectively do its job under the skin.
How Much Botox Will I Need?
The amount of medication we inject into each muscle will vary based on different factors, with anywhere between 20 to 60 units injected for each treated area. The tone of your muscles, as well as their size, are two of the biggest factors that determine how many units you’ll need. Not everybody has the same muscle tone, so someone with weaker muscles may need fewer units, whereas someone with stronger muscles may need more.
Other factors include the depth of fine lines and the size of wrinkles, as deeper lines or larger wrinkles may require more medication. A common scenario we see is one in which a patient has received regular treatments for many years and gradually requires smaller doses than when they first started. This is because the muscles can become more rested over time and less tense, which can then make them more responsive to this therapy.
How Long Will the Results Last?
Although the effects of Botox typically wear off within a few months, you may need it less frequently over time as your muscles become retrained to stay in a more relaxed state naturally. Effects should last a minimum of at least three months for most patients, though some may experience these benefits for up to six months.
There are many other factors that can also affect how long the results last, such as whether you exercise regularly, get enough sleep or have a high metabolism. There’s evidence that zinc and other nutrients can play a role in extending the effects, so it’s also important that you maintain a healthy diet that’s full of vitamins and minerals.
How Safe Is This Treatment?
What makes this therapy so safe is the fact that it’s minimally invasive with temporary effects, so there is no downtime and no permanent changes made. Although this medication paralyzes muscles, only small amounts are used, so other areas of the face or body are unaffected.
Also, this treatment has been used by millions of people around the world for over three decades and is FDA-approved for use on certain lines and wrinkles that are around the eyes, on the forehead, and between the eyebrows. For all of these reasons, it’s considerably safer than surgery and less invasive than other therapies.
